Opioid overdose deaths have increased almost 4 times (400%) in the last 19 years, according to the National Institute of Health. In Butte County in 2017 there were 17 deaths related to opioid overdose. This equates to 7.1 deaths per 100,000 persons, compared to the California state average of 4.6 deaths per 100,000 persons, according to Butte County Public Health officials.

In 2017, opioid overdose killed more people than firearms or motor vehicles. More than half of these deaths were from diverted opioids, or opioid prescriptions shared or given to an individual it was not prescribed to. Less than half of opioid deaths were from heroin.
